Free online store: what is really free

Plenty of builders promise a free online store. They exist, but free usually means you pay somewhere else: a cut of every sale, the builder's ads on your store, a long subdomain or locked features. Here is how to tell them apart.

The three kinds of free

  • Commission: the store is free, but the platform takes a percentage of each sale
  • Limited plan: few products, no custom domain, the platform's logo on your store
  • Free trial: everything is open for a few days, then you pick a plan

What always costs money

Even on a free platform you will pay card processing fees, shipping and usually a domain name. Do the math over a year, on the revenue you are aiming for.

When a commission costs more

A few percent feels painless at first. On $2,000 of sales a month, 5% is $100: more than a plan. Free is a good way to test an idea, rarely the right choice for a store that sells.

The Yaliko free trial

Fourteen days with every feature, no credit card. Build your store, add your products and place a test order. After that, plans start at $19 a month, with no fee on your sales.

Frequently asked questions

Can I sell without paying anything?

To test an idea, yes, with a commission-based builder. Once you sell regularly, a plan with no commission usually costs less.

Do I need a card for the Yaliko trial?

No. You choose a plan at the end of the fourteen days, if the store works for you.

What happens to my store if I don't subscribe?

Your products and settings are kept, but you can't edit the store until you choose a plan.
